About the event

We invite you to the joint event “DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE AND CIRCULAR CONSTRUCTION” with MITArchA’s Global Reach Initiative. The webinar session with MIT Alumnus and ETH Zurich Professors Catherine De Wolf and Philippe Block takes place on Monday September 18 11:00 AM EDT / 5:00 PM CET.

Catherine De Wolf MS’14 & PhD ’17, will explore how digital technologies facilitate the realization of a 5 Ds framework for circular construction – Data, Detection, Disassembly, Distribution and Design – in a harmonious effort to close the resource loop. The presentation highlights reuse in action through the project on the reuse of bent glasses from the iconic Centre Pompidou in Paris and the construction of a dome on the ETH Zurich Campus made from 100% reclaimed elements.

Philippe Block. SMarchS ’05 & PhD ’09, will talk to us about Rethinking construction: Learning from the past to design a better future: Following the motto “strength through geometry” and the principles of traditional unreinforced masonry construction, this short input will show how translating the (lost) knowledge of the Gothic master builders into today’s praxis results in truly sustainable, circular and economical structures, addressing climate change by significantly reducing embodied emissions, utilizing fewer single-use resources and minimizing construction waste.
